Privacy Notice
- Effective date:
Athena Insights is a nonprofit corporation organized in Delaware. We run Americans on AI (www.americanson.ai) to share informational content. This notice covers only that site. It does not cover Athena Insights' other websites, services, or activities.
We collect as little information about you as we can. This site uses no cookies and keeps no identifier about you; if you sign up for our newsletter, Substack shares your name and email address so we can send it.
The rest of this notice explains the data we collect through the services we use, how we use it, and how we handle certain legal and contractual obligations.
1. The data we collect through the services we use
Website analytics (GoatCounter). We use GoatCounter to count visits to our pages and see where visitors come from. It uses no cookies and stores nothing in your browser. For each page view it records the page, the site that linked to it, and general information about your browser, device, language, and country. To count a return visit within the same day, it keeps your IP address and browser details in memory for up to eight hours, and then discards them; it does not store a tracking identifier. For details, see GoatCounter's Privacy Policy.
Website hosting (Netlify). Netlify hosts our site. Like most web hosts, its servers process some technical request data, which can include IP addresses and information about your device and browser, to deliver pages and keep the service secure. Netlify handles this hosting data on our behalf as our service provider. For details, see Netlify's Privacy Policy.
Newsletter signups (Substack). If you subscribe to our newsletter, Substack handles that. We receive your email address and name so we can send you our newsletter. Substack may collect more information under its own policies, such as your IP address, information about your device and browser, and details for your Substack profile. Substack processes subscriber information on our behalf as our service provider, and it also acts as an independent controller for some platform data. For details, see Substack's Privacy Policy.
2. How we use that data
- To see which pages are read and where readers come from, in aggregate.
- To operate and secure the website.
- To send our newsletter to people who subscribe, and to let them unsubscribe at any time.
We do not sell or rent your personal information, and we earn no revenue from selling or sharing it. We do not use analytics data to identify individual visitors. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 16.
Your information. We keep your newsletter email and name until you unsubscribe, which you can do from any newsletter or by emailing us. Wherever you live, you can email us at hello@athenainsights.org to see, correct, or delete the information you have given us, or to ask a question.
3. Complying with certain laws and contractual obligations
Do Not Track. Our analytics use no cookies, keep no identifier about you, and do not follow you to other websites, so there is nothing to opt out of. We do not respond to browser "Do Not Track" signals, because we do not track personally identifiable information across sites.
California (CCPA and CalOPPA). We describe above the categories of personal information we collect (such as your email address and technical or usage data) and the categories of third parties involved (our hosting, analytics, and newsletter providers).
Delaware (DPDPA and DOPPA). This notice describes the personal data we process, why we process it, the third parties involved, and how to reach us.
Email (CAN-SPAM). Every newsletter includes a one-click unsubscribe link and our postal address in its footer. We honor unsubscribe requests promptly.
EU/UK (GDPR). At the time of drafting this notice, we run this site for a US audience. We do not direct it at, or monitor the behavior of, individuals in the EU/EEA or UK.
Legal requests. We may disclose information if the law requires it, such as in response to a subpoena, court order, or other legal process.
Changes. If we make material changes to this notice, we will post the new version here and update the effective date above.
